William "Bill" Amory, devoted family man and computer programmer, died peacefully on December 8th, 2020. He was born on October 13th, 1932, and grew up in Dover, MA. He was the 4th of 5 children of Harold "Buzz" Amory, a cotton merchant, and Amey Peters Amory (later, Amey Ketchum). Bill attended Dedham Country Day School where he won the Dedham Country Day Olympics against his great friend Tom Halstead. Family tradition propelled him on to Groton School, which he found quite miserable, graduating in 1951. In contrast, he loved the intellectual and artistic life of Harvard College, class of 1955. Upon graduation, Bill received his draft notice and first job offer on the same day. He served in the U.S. Army as a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic, and then joined the MITRE corporation where he worked for 34 years, from 1959 to 1993. He learned how to program computers, and brought that knowledge to others, including to elementary schools in Wellesley Massachusetts. In 1991, he was awarded MITRE's Affirmative Action award for his support of women in the workplace. In 1957, Bill met and married the love of his life, Joan Sage Amory. During their 63 year marriage, they raised four children in Wellesley MA. His children, and later his grandchildren, were the center of his life. Bill spent summers with his kids and grandkids in North Haven ME, where his own grandfather, W. Y. Peters, had designed several of the summer "cottages". On a dare from a friend Bill started volunteering at the Lexington Children's Center, reading to and playing with preschoolers. He didn't stop until almost 30 years later, volunteering as well at the Child Study Center at Wellesley College and Hunnewell School in Wellesley. As his mother would have said, Bill was an "able man". He was an athlete, an artist, and an intellect. He loved to carve and build things, to sing, to write poetry and computer code, but above all else to spend time with his family. Almost every summer of his life he traveled to North Haven, Maine, where he first learned and then, in turn, taught his kids and grandkids the important things in life: how to tie a bowline, how to row strong and true, and how to sail close hauled with one arm out to scratch a match on an unsuspecting bell or buoy. He taught them how to captain a whaler, and whistle a lively tune. He loved cooking cranberry sauce at the holidays, scheduling lunches with friends, crafting elaborate valentines, and working on his computer. Bill is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan Sage Amory; one brother, Jim Amory, of NY; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ted and Hope Sage, of North Haven ME. He is also survived by his children, Jennifer Amory and her partner John Travis, and grandchildren Jeremy Kazanjian-Amory and Kyle Kazanjian-Amory; Deborah Amory, her wife Amy Tweedy, and grandson Alexander Masterpole; Tim and Elaine Amory, and grandchildren Jared Amory, Austin Amory, and Melissa Amory; and Peter Amory and Susan Kenyon, and grandchildren Curtis and Justine Amory. Bill is survived as well by many adoring nephews, nieces, friends and extended family. Due to COVID-19, services will be private.
