Thomas Clarkson Johnson III (T3) died on August 2, 2016 at age 92. Formerly of Vero Beach, Florida, he died peacefully with his family in Brookline, Massachusetts, where he lived since 2011. Born in Swampscott, Massachusetts on November 4, 1923, Tom later grew up in New York City, where he attended DeWitt Clinton High School. After learning to swim at a Fresh Air camp, he went on to become a competitive swimmer and a lifeguard. During the Second World War, he served in the Army National Guard and as sergeant in the 101st Field Artillery Regiment. He met his wife, Mary Wesp, on the beach in Fire Island in the summer of 1942. They were married in 1946 and moved to Levittown, Long Island. After the war, Tom attended Columbia University for two years before starting a career in the insurance industry. Initially an underwriter for fire and marine insurance, he later became an international insurance and reinsurance broker. In the 1960s and 1970s, he worked for Alexander and Alexander, Inc., and was later a vice president at Marsh and McLennan. During these years, he and his family lived in Westbury and Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island. When he retired in 1980, he and Mary relocated to Vero Beach, Florida, where he lived for thirty years. Tom was an avid swimmer and American Red Cross water safety instructor. For many years, he ran a March of Dimes swimming program for special needs children in Westbury, New York. In retirement, he was a volunteer instructor at the Indian River County pool in Gifford, Florida where he taught both adults and children to swim. He also served on the Parks and Recreation Committee for Indian River County and was active in local politics. He is survived by his daughter, Marilynn Johnson and her husband Dan Zedek, of Brookline, Massachusetts, as well as two grandchildren, Rosa Zedek of San Francisco and Jacob Zedek of New York City. He is predeceased by his wife, Mary Wesp Johnson, and three sisters, Patricia Morgan, Katharine Wolfe, and Theodate Rose. Funeral services are private and will be held at a later date.
