Robert E. "Bob" McKay, 91, of Brookline, father of nine and tireless advocate for affordable housing, passed away peacefully in the company of his loving family on January 22. Bob will be dearly missed by his eight children, Peter (Debbie), Vincent (Betsy), Clare (Dana), Frances, Paula, Catherine, Robert and David and their mother, Norma J. McKay of Newbury, and stepchildren Mai and Tony Mariano. He was a proud and loving grandfather to his many grandchildren who will also miss him. He was pre-deceased by his son Matthew and Ann Mariano McKay, who he married in 2006. Bob was born in Chicago, and lived in the Midwest until 1967 when he took a position as the founding Director of CHAPA, Citizens Housing and Planning Association in Boston. The family moved to Newton at that time. Bob led CHAPA, now celebrating its 50th year, until 1987. His work in the housing field then expanded to national level advocacy with the founding of the Council of Large Public Housing Authorities. He later served as the housing policy expert for the Child Welfare League in Washington D.C., where he lived for nearly 10 years. Bob officially retired in his early 80s, but remained active in the housing field, founding yet another research and policy center in Washington, the National Center for Housing and Child Welfare. He moved back to Brookline ten years ago, and until very recently, when health issues slowed him down, he remained the consummate networker that defined his professional career. He had many passions: socializing with family and friends, traveling, visiting his beloved Boston Y for yoga and a steam bath, Handel and Hayden concerts and gardening on Cape Cod. Bob took great joy, too, in supporting the publication and film rights to his late wife Ann's book, War Torn, the personal stories of female reporters during the Vietnam War. Friends and relatives are respectfully invited to attend a celebration of Bob's life, which will take place Saturday, January 28 at Saint Lawrence Church, 774 Boylston Street, BROOKLINE, at 12:30pm with reception to follow. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made in Bob's name to two organizations that carry on his work: the Pine Street Inn or CHAPA, in Boston.
