Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. Robert Myrl Amick, 84, of Brookline, MA, passed away on January 13, 2018. The son of Chester and Marcella Amick of Bound Brook, NJ, Bob graduated from Phillips Academy and Princeton University, class of 1955, with a degree in chemistry. Bob attended Yale Medical School, where he met and married Carol Jockers, and they graduated together in 1959. After their residencies at Cincinnati General Hospital, they moved to Fort Smith, AR, where Bob served two years in the army as a captain at Fort Chaffee. In 1963, the first of their four children was born. The following year, they moved to Boston, where Bob worked at the Jimmy Fund and the Boston VA Hospital. In 1979, while on sabbatical, he completed the MIT Sloan Fellows Program and received a master of science in management. Bob remained at the VA for the duration of his career and served in numerous roles, including Chief of Staff and Director of Education. Late in his career, Bob returned to clinical medicine and particularly enjoyed the opportunity to make home visits and care for the most-vulnerable, elderly patients. Throughout his decades at the Boston VA and well into his retirement, Bob balanced his career and family with his commitment to volunteer work and his passion for teaching. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees at The Park School, taught at the Boston University Medical School, and was an early supporter and board member of the Princeton AlumniCorps. Bob was as interested in learning about the young people he met as he was in helping them find their paths forward in life. Bobs proudest accomplishment was his six-decade marriage to Carol, whom he met, patiently wooed, and married during medical school. Theirs was a true, life-long partnership in which they each supported the other through busy medical careers and as they raised their four children. As their children grew and the pace of their careers slowed, Bob and Carol developed a new love for travel around the world with various medical societies, alumni groups, and especially their family. While Bob loved to garden and cook, his greatest joy in life was the time he spent with Carol, their children, eleven grandchildren, and innumerable others he welcomed into his heart and home. His favorite times were the long summer afternoons he spent on the front porch of their lake house watching his children, grandchildren, and so many friends enjoy the activities the lake offered. Throughout his life, Bob was a model of compassion, generosity, and integrity; hearts are heavy at this profound loss. Bob is survived by his wife, Carol, of Brookline, MA; son Robert (Charlie) Amick and his wife, Tamra, of Sunnyvale, CA; daughter Helen Amick of Sunnyvale, CA; daughter Joan Kelly and her husband, Steve, of Newton, MA; daughter Lisa DiAdamo and her husband, Rob, of Brookline, MA; brother James Amick of Princeton, NJ; eleven grandchildren; and two nieces and two nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Donald Amick of Warren, NJ; his sister-in-law Helen Bradley of Center Tuftonboro, NH, and a niece. A celebration of Bobs life will take place on Saturday, February 3rd at 10:30am at the Union Church in Waban, 14 Collins Road, Waban, MA. Immediately following the service, there will be a lunch in Bobs honor. In lieu of flowers, please embrace your family and friends.
