Paul Chen, 84, of Saint Paul, MN, passed away on January 14, succumbing to multiple infections in an unexpected reprise of cancer in Boston, MA. Paul was born on July 4, 1937 to Hsin-Hsih Chen and Hsiu-Wen Lin in Shantou, China. As a child, he was violently displaced from a life of privilege –afforded by his mother as a physician and father as school principal – to a life of desolation as a homeless refugee in Hong Kong. It was those experiences in his early years, and the sacrifices that his parents made for him, that spurred him to pursue higher education, and devote his life to the advancement of the Kingdom of God. After graduating from the National Taiwan University (NTU) in Electrical Engineering, he went on to complete his Master's Degree at the University of Minnesota. After graduation, his first job was at Sperry Univac. Later he worked for NCR, where he was awarded the 1988 Outstanding Achievement Award for his work on "Multilayered Printed Circuit Board with Domain Partitioning" which led to a US patent. The work he did in 1988 is still foundational to the world of digital communication today. It was at NTU, that he met the woman of his dreams, Linda (Ming-Ko) in 1956. He pursued her for nearly a decade before they wed in 1964. They have 2 children: Anita and Patrick. Upon retiring from Seagate in 1996, he transitioned into a second full time career in real estate investments. It was this occupation that kept him emotionally and physically young at heart. He used this context to bless as many people as he would encounter, from providing a residential home for people in need, to mentoring the next generation with life skills in home maintenance. He was much beloved by his family who recognized his life as a reflection of his faith in God. He lived generously, loved unconditionally, and served family and community sacrificially. Paul is predeceased by his parents; his sister, Tek-Fei; and his brother, Anthony. He is survived by his wife, Linda Chen; his brother, Ruben Chen; his two children Anita (Lee) and Patrick Chen; and his four grandchildren, Abigail, Ashley, Alexander, and Calvin. Whether in times of prosperity or trial, his faith in his Heavenly Father remained resolute. He always believed God is in control and loved singing the hymn "This is My Father's World" "This is my Father's world: O let me ne'er forget That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the Ruler yet. This is my Father's world: Why should my heart be sad? The Lord is King: let the heavens ring! God reigns; let earth be glad!" Though we are sad that he is no longer physically with us, we rejoice that he is now with His Heavenly Father and luxuriating in all the blessings that God alone provides. From the perspective of heaven, it will be a mere blink of an eye until we in Christ will be reunited with him in heaven. A celebration of life service is planned for Saturday, January 22, 2022 at 4 PM EST at the Bell-O'Dea Funeral Home in Brookline Massachusetts with Cantonese translation provided during the service.
