Obituary

Michael Fung was born to Hon Hing and Norah (Wong) Fung on August 21, 1943, in Hong Kong. He grew up with four younger brothers and was very close to his maternal grandmother.

Michael graduated from the Diocese Boys' School in Hong Kong and came to the United States in 1962 to attend Iowa State University. He moved to Boston for his graduate studies in Chemistry at MIT.

Michael began his 30+ year career with Boston Public Schools as a math and science teacher at English High School in 1971. During his career he served as a teacher, a principal, and in various leadership roles within the school department. He retired in 2007 after 10 years as Headmaster at Charleston High School. Improving public education in Boston was his life's work.

Michael and Susan met while working on the Adult Ed program in Chinatown in 1971. They married in 1972 and raised four children. Just recently, in December, they hit a milestone of 50 years of marriage.

In his retirement, Michael found immense joy in his grandchildren. He was rarely without a camera and spent endless hours editing and printing photos of them to share. "Gung gung," as he was known to the grandkids, was always up for a 3-hour ride on the T or a trip to the museum. Even as the kids have gotten older and moved on from wooden trains to video games, he could always be counted on to produce a shiny new car or a Lego set from his ever-growing toy closet.

This past year has been a year of many losses for Michael. In April, his first-born son, Monbill, passed away unexpectedly in Bermuda. One of his last surviving aunts passed in August, and his brother, John, lost his battle with cancer in October.

Michael passed away at the age of 79 on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, in Boston. He is survived by his wife, Susan, his son, Monnard, his older daughter, Monnette Yoshino and her husband, Brian, his younger daughter, Monique Liu and her husband, Kenneth, and his brothers, Tony, Bernard, and Edmond. He leaves behind six grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Family and friends are welcome to attend a memorial service, to be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at Josiah Quincy lower elementary School in Boston at 10:30am.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to your favorite charity in Michael's name.
