Mary Margaret Thomits

Mary Margaret Thomits, 86, passed away on August 30, 2026.

Mary spent nearly her entire life in Brookline, Massachusetts, a community that was truly home to her. Later in life, she moved to Northbridge, where she lived in assisted living, and most recently received care in Newton.

The daughter of Irish immigrants Barbara and Daniel O’Donnell, Mary was deeply proud of her Irish heritage, something that remained an important part of who she was throughout her life. She was also a devout Catholic whose faith was a constant source of strength and meaning to her.

Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, Francis “Buddy” Thomits, who passed away in 2018. Together, they shared almost 50 years of marriage and raised their two daughters, Barbara and Carolyn.

A dedicated special education teacher, Mary had a true love for education, particularly mathematics, and took great pride in helping her students learn and succeed. Her own commitment to education never stopped. She even went back to school in her 50s and received a master’s degree, an accomplishment that made her very proud.

Mary is survived by her daughters, Barbara and Carolyn; her granddaughters, Nasiah “Siah” Davis and Destiny Wedge; her sister, Evelyn; and her brother, Danny O’Donnell and his wife, Sheila. She is also survived by several beloved nieces and nephews.

Mary also treasured the friendships she shared with Kenna and Joe Sullivan and Tony and Bridget Ashur, whose friendship and presence in her life meant so much to her.

Mary will be remembered for her intelligence, her strong personality, her dedication to education, her deep Catholic faith, her pride in her Irish roots, and above all, the life she shared with the family and friends who loved her.
