On Thursday, May 21, 2020, Martin Lederman, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 86. Martin, known as Marty, was born on February 16, 1934, in Brooklyn, NY, to Doris (Zuckerman) Lederman and Max Lederman. He was the third of four children, Gloria, Melvin, and younger brother, Perry. Marty graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn in 1951 and served as a Marine during the Korean War as a rifle and pistol coach stationed in Japan. Marty spoke proudly of his time overseas and of how he greatly enjoyed the local food. In 1957, Marty told his mother that he had met "the most beautiful girl in the world," and on May 21, 1961, Marty and Henrietta (Roseff) were married. Marty went on to complete his undergraduate degree, which he began prior to enlisting in the Marine Corp, at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. After graduating from Michigan, Marty and Henny traveled to Europe and eventually settled in Brussels, Belgium, where they lived for many years. It was there that Marty attended medical school and Henny worked for the European Office of Aerospace Research and Development. They returned to the US after Marty's brother Melvin was killed in action in Vietnam in 1969. Marty worked tirelessly to correct a records error that prevented his brother from receiving a Purple Heart medal, which Melvin was finally awarded in 2016. Since Melvin had lived in the Boston area, Marty and Henny decided to move closer to family, eventually bringing Marty's parents with them and moving all together into a large house with apartments for both families. Marty was a true Renaissance main, but he especially loved opera and classical music. He and Henny sang in the Brookline Chorus for many years. He also worked as a piano tuner and photographer and was an avid collector of many things, including military memorabilia and pianos (3 of which were once kept in their home in Brookline). Marty was a proud Marine and veteran who always wore his Marine Corps hat and belt buckle. Marty was a caretaker by nature and loved helping people solve problems. He was also a natural entertainer and enjoyed blowing the shofar for his family during the high holidays, delighted in making bad puns and was known to wear a fez hoping to make everyone around him smile. If Henny was the love of his life, his grandchildren, Eli, Max, and Violet, were his greatest joy. He spent as much time as he could with them and cared for them often when they were babies. He is survived by his wife Henny, to whom he was married for exactly 59 years, his two children Melvin Lederman and Gloria (Lederman) Kuris, Gloria's husband Benjamin Kuris, his grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was a beloved son, husband, father, and grandfather and will be missed dearly. Most loved and most beloved.
