Margaret Dorkey McCormick attended Friends Seminary, New York, graduating in 1942. Margaret, also known as "Tod", earned her BA from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts with a degree in Child Psychology, in 1946. She worked as a docent at Newark Museum, introducing children from all backgrounds to art. She was awarded a Fulbright scholarship in 1953, and spent a year in Paris, studying art history. Margaret earned an MFA in 1957 from New York Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. She taught art history at Smith, Vassar and Stonehill Colleges. Margaret married fellow art historian Thomas Julian McCormick on March 23, 1957. They were married for 62 years, until Thomas predeceased her in April, 2019. In addition to her professional interests, Margaret was always active in the community. She served as president of the Land Preservation Society and Norton Historical Society, and as an officer for the Wheaton College class of 1946. She also volunteered for the Wheaton Friends of Art, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Church of Our Saviour in Brookline, and Thyroid Foundation of America. Art history was an avocation as well as vocation for both Margaret and Thomas. They traveled extensively in England, Europe and beyond, until they were well into their eighties. Margaret was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Marjorie Dorkey, and her siblings Charles Dorkey, Jr. and Carol Dorkey Norris. She is survived by her daughters, Sarah Bates and Martha Notaras, and three grandchildren, Emily Bates and Andrew and Charlotte Notaras.
