Leonard J. Patenaude, age 79 of Brookline, died at home on March 21, 2022 surrounded by his family, wife Doreen Blanc Rockstrom, son Mason Patenaude (and wife Courtney Muller), daughter Lisa Stroman, and grandson Dylan Stroman. When Leonard realized that his lung diseases had reached an incurable state, he opted for hospice at home with Good Shepherd Community Care. It was his wish to die at home, holding hands with his loved ones and looking out at his precious Chestnut trees and blue sky. Every morning he would ask his wife to throw open the drapes so he could see the light and appreciate the new day unfolding. Leonard was truly a Renaissance Man. His business was trust and investment with Nichols & Pratt, the boutique firm he joined 42 years ago when the firm was in its infancy. Always ready with an infectious smile and a clever joke, he liked to tell friends that he was hired as a secretary (which was true) and rose to become their first partner – and also the President of the Boston Society of Security Analysts. Leonard studied piano as a youngster in Holyoke, MA, and after a year studying psychology at Clark University, transferred to New England Conservatory from which he graduated in 1969 with a degree in piano performance. Soon after graduation he relocated to Provincetown where he wrote music and plays and became the music director for the Provincetown Playhouse. During these years he was single dad to young Lisa. Realizing that life as a musician would not give him the income needed to support a family, he relocated back to Boston to begin his finance career at Nichols & Pratt, where he was noted for cutting edge investment analysis and nurturing a prestigious client list. He retired in 2020. In Boston he met and married Andrea Farkas Patenaude, Ph.D., a psychologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Their happy 40-year marriage ended in early 2018 with her untimely death. Leonard was a prolific reader, a supporter of numerous arts organizations in Boston and Maine, and an international traveler. For decades he rented a house on the Connecticut River in Sunderland, MA and spent many summer days there, admiring the beauty of the river and hills of Pioneer Valley with Andrea and their son, Mason. A small private funeral service was held in Brookline earlier this week, and a larger celebration of his life is planned for Fall 2022. Other survivors include son-in-law Lyle Stroman, granddaughter-in-law Emily Stroman, great-granddaughter Piper Stroman, and sister Lorraine Marshall.
