John F. McDonald of Brookline passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on January 26, 2025.  Loving husband of Shirley J. (Flanagan) McDonald of 55 years. Loving father of Jay and Rachel McDonald of Plano, TX, David and Pam McDonald of Weare, NH, Beth McDonald of Brookline, MA, and Jane and Brent Sakowski of Lucas, TX.  Beloved and proud "Grumpy" of Jack, Joshua, Madison, Ava and Ryan.  Brother-in-law to Linda and Eddie Keaveney and nephews, Brian and Michael Keaveney. Best friend to his beloved loyal pup, Riley.  Predeceased by his parents James and Mary (O'Connell) McDonald and his siblings James and Margaret McDonald.

John resided in Brookline his whole life.  He was a graduate of St. Mary's High School. After high school, he enlisted in the Army National Guard. He then served as a Brookline Police Officer for over 44 years.  After retiring, he particularly enjoyed his time as a crossing guard, ensuring the safety of the neighborhood children.  His neighbors appreciated his role as Neighborhood Watch, and enjoyed his gift of gab with his stories of everything and anything.

As a father, John was constantly "On The Road Again."  He drove his family to the Cape, Maine, hockey and all other sporting events, West Point, UNH, and Virginia. He was happy to chauffeur the family to and from Red Sox games.  When out running errands, John was constantly running into friends and reminiscing.  At home, he had stories for every occasion and could always be counted on for a great speech.  Once his grandchildren came along, he affectionately became known as "Grumpy," and there were trips to the park and Ogunquit Beach.  John also enjoyed taking Riley around for walks and drives.  He will be remembered as a protector of family, friends, and neighbors.
