John Eliopoulos passed away peacefully at the USC Verdugo Hills Hospital on Thursday, July 28 in Glendale, CA at the age of 95. John is survived by his children, Nicholas Eliopoulos of Pasadena, CA and John Louis Eliopoulos, and his wife, Casey and his granddaughters Katherine and Madison of New York, NY. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years Katherine (Kezas), his parents Nicholas and Esmine, and his siblings Barbara, Peter, Virginia, and Daniel. John was born on February 28, 1927, in Aberdeen, WA. He graduated from Aberdeen High School and enlisted in the US Navy and served in World War II. After the war ended, he completed a degree in International Studies from the University of Southern California and joined the Foreign Service where he served as a diplomat in Israel and other countries. On a diplomatic break, he met his wife Katherine at a church event in Los Angeles. They were married after a brief engagement, and he resumed his Foreign Service duties with her by his side in Hong Kong. John and Katherine returned to California in time to welcome Nicholas and John turned his attention to local government and began working for Los Angeles County, later becoming the Director of Assessment Standards. They settled in Glendale and welcomed John Louis 10 years after Nicholas was born. John was fortunate to be able to retire early from LA County and spent time enjoying life with his wife and sons. Travel was a key focus of John's early retirement years. He and Katherine traveled to nearly all fifty states with their son John. They enjoyed family vacations to Europe and were able to return to Hong Kong to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They did not let their age limit them, first relocating to Henderson, NV and enjoying all that the Las Vegas area had to offer, and then relocating to greater Boston just prior to the birth of their twin granddaughters. John was an avid sports fan and followed USC athletics closely. A pillar of strength for his family throughout the years, he was always there to lend support and guidance. A funeral is scheduled at Bell-O'Dea Funeral Home at 376 Washington St in Brookline, MA on Tuesday, August 9 at 12 PM followed by burial at Forest Hills cemetery in Boston.
