Joan Llewellyn Sage Amory

Joan Llewellyn Sage Amory passed away peacefully on July 27, 2026. She was born on July 7, 1933 to Marjorie and Charles Rodney Sage of Arlington, MA. She grew up with her younger brother Ted in Cambridge, MA where her father was the proud owner of Sage's Market and her mother was an accomplished pianist.

Joan attended Abbot Academy and graduated from Beaver Country Day School in 1951. She also attended Katherine Gibbs School and Skidmore College. She married the love of her life, William (Bill) Amory in 1957 and raised four children in Wellesley, MA. Joan and Bill were married 63 years. Devoted parents and grandparents, they attended hundreds of games and events their kids and grandkids participated in. Joan didn't particularly like to cook, but she loved a good party and even had a tasty recipe for seafood casserole that serves 18.

Joan was a force of nature. Besides running a very well organized household of six, she loved opera and attended for many years an opera class offered by Wellesley College. She was also passionate about the Red Sox and the Patriots and often watched a game while Bill read a good book. Having strong and informed opinions along with a healthy respect for others' perspectives, she naturally found a deep interest in politics.

After the kids were out of the house, Joan co-founded Serendipity Tours, a travel company that specialized in international garden tours with her friends Sylvia Constable and Anne Mazlish. She volunteered for over 30 years at the Newton Wellesley Hospital, and loved spending time with friends. She traveled widely with Jackie Rogers, and was always happy to share a glass of wine and laughter with Martha McGandy, Barbara Davidson, or Peggy Rothroff. Her newest friend Joan Corb was known as Joan 2; she was simply #1.

The island of North Haven, Maine held a very special place in Joan's heart and was in fact her favorite place to be. She was introduced to the island by her husband, and soon convinced her brother Ted Sage and family to join them there. She enjoyed cruising, and a week-long sail around Penobscot Bay with kids and dear friend Frazier Patrick became an annual event. In her later years, she relished nothing more than a rousing game of Rummikub or sitting on her deck in the warm July sun. She could also often be found on the deck at sunset, a bourbon in hand, surrounded by a lively group of friends and family.

Joan was pre-deceased by her husband, Bill Amory, and her brother Ted Sage. She will be missed dearly by those who survive her, including her sisters-in-law Hope Sage, Elaine Tennant, and Carolyn Amory, her four children and their partners, 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. This legion of family she leaves behind includes her daughter Jenny Amory and partner John Travis, and grandsons Jeremy Kazanjian-Amory and his wife Sam Michaelsen and the two great-grandchildren Margot and Addison, Kyle Kazanjian-Amory and his fiance Frankie Miller; her daughter Deborah Amory and wife Amy Tweedy, and grandson Alexander Masterpole; her son Tim Amory and wife Elaine Amory, and grandchildren Jared and Dona Amory, Austin and Allison Amory, Melissa Amory and fiance Griffin Andrews; and her son Peter Amory and wife Susan Kenyon, and grandchildren Curtis and Justine Amory. Joan is survived as well by many adoring nephews, nieces, friends and extended family.

The family expresses our appreciation for her caregivers including Sue Paradis and the amazing women of Superior Home Health Care, as well as staff at the Residence at Riverbend in Ipswich MA, for the extra support and love they provided in Joan's final months.

A small memorial service will be held at Forest Hills Cemetery in Boston, MA at a later date.  Donations in Joan's memory may be made to North Haven Sustainable Housing, P.O. Box 373, North Haven, ME 04853 .
