HULL, Joan C. 84, of Brookline died peacefully at home on June 21, 2016. Joan began her career as a history teacher at Butler High School in New Jersey, She did volunteer work for the New Jersey Historical Society, becoming its Executive Director and President from 1979-1985. Joan moved to Boston to become Executive Director of the Bostonian Society. She led the Society from 1987 -1998, and again in 2003-2004, and transformed that organization, and the practice of history in Boston. Reopening the Old State House after a major restoration with "The Last Tenement: Confronting Community and Urban Renewal in Boston's West End", Joan broadened the organization's mission to include Boston's neighborhoods and their rich history. The Local Historical Societies Consortium, the Historic Markers Program, and exhibits on the East Boston penny ferry and Washington Street in the South End brought those stories, and the important people, places and events in Boston history well-deserved attention. Joan served on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the Freedom Trail Foundation, the Boston City Hall Plaza Trust, and the Boston Preservation Roundtable and the Boston 2000 Arts & Humanities Committee. She was the long-time president of the Friends of Fenway Studios, spearheading successful fundraising campaigns towards the preservation of Fenway Studios, a National Historic Landmark in Boston. Joan also served on the board of the South End Historical Society and was a Fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society. Joan Hull was the National Chair for the Standards, Tenure and Ethics Committee of the American Association for State and Local History, a consultant to the Museum Assessment Program , a field reviewer for the Institute of Museum Services and a panelist and reader for the National Endowment for the Humanities. While in New Jersey, Joan served as General Chair and President of the League of Historical Societies of New Jersey, and the New Jersey Battleship State Commission and was a historical consultant for the New Jersey PBS TV film, "Crossroads to Freedom" She loved travel, the opera and all things Boston. Joan is survived by her nieces Pam Hill, Pat Wright and her husband Ken, Lynn Hull, Shelley Hull, Jayne Schroeder and her husband Max, her nephew Milton Hull and his wife Beth, and many grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Milton and Amelia Hull, her sister Charlotte Hill and brother Milton Hull. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, June 27th from 5:00 7:00 p.m. at the Bell-O'Dea Funeral Home, 376 Washington St., Brookline. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, June 28th at 9:00 a.m. at Christ Church/Old North Church. Parking is available at the North End Garage, 600 Commercial Street (located at Commercial and Hull). You can take Hull Street which dead ends at the church (it is a steep hill) or take Prince and then left on Salem, 4/5 big blocks away.
