Edward Emelin White, Jr. passed away on May 16, 2023. He was born on October 4, 1945 to Muriel Fox White and Edward E. White of Larchmont, NY. He went by the nickname Tim throughout his life. Even at age six, he preferred the warmth of informality and renamed his beloved sister Winifred as Penny.

Tim grew up among many cousins, playing in the salt marshes along Long Island Sound, listening to jazz in New York City, and sharing family lore. Tim earned a B.A. in History from Boston University in 1967 and a M.A. in Modern American History from New York University in 1971. He completed his law degree at Boston University in 1973.

As a young adult, Tim's love of adventure took him traveling in India, canoeing down the Allagash, bicycling from London to Florence, and exploring remote towns in Peru and Guatemala. Later in life, he traveled widely in Europe and the US, exploring national parks and fine art museums, returning in summer to his favorite quarries in Maine. As his Parkinson's Disease progressed in recent years, he still enjoyed dips in Walden Pond, visits to friends, and family celebrations.

Tim's legal career began at the Greater Boston Legal Services, where he defended people who faced eviction and helped to start a program for the elderly. He later served as Assistant Attorney General in Maine. For three decades, he led a group of lawyers at Harvard Pilgrim Health Plan in Wellesley, MA. His goal was to provide patients with fair access to health care.

Tim's interests spanned 19th century American art, photography, history, and the legacy of his family's innovations in underground construction. As a nature lover and avid reader, Tim stuffed the pages of his books with tree leaves awaiting identification. Photos of his beloved apricot-eared poodle, Daphne, grace his shelves.

Tim is survived by his three children, Hilary White of Jamaica Plain, MA, Eric White and his wife Shay Hopkins of Santa Barbara, CA, and Heather White of Portland, ME; his partner Ann Helwege of Brookline, MA, and her family, including Simon Moody, Olivia Moody, Varun Saravanan and grandchildren Ileana and Kamala Saravanan; and his many cousins and dear friends. He liked to refer to himself as a "lucky dog" but it is we who were lucky to have him in our lives.
