Edward Burgess Powell, 92, of Belmont, MA, was born in the 13th minute of the 13th hour, the 13th baby born at Waltham Hospital on the 13th day of August, 1929. Passing peacefully on the14th of January 2022, he finally proved that 13 truly was his lucky number, as he had always claimed. A Veteran, serving during the Korean War, he credits his subsequent journalism career to a series of serendipitous conversations while serving as an orderly at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. More enthusiastic about sports than bedpans, he engaged in animated conversation with a convalescing, high ranking official who cut him new orders, shipping him off to obtain Communications Training in Anchorage Alaska, where he covered sports. He graduated from the University of Missouri's School of Journalism and joined the Providence Journal in the 1950's as a reporter, later as bureau manager, until 1970. Caring deeply about inequities, he was particularly proud of a series of reporting around school integration and economic disparities in Mississippi. He went on to work at several Rhode Island non-profit agencies before moving to Brookline, Mass, where he found his true calling in Human Services. Building a second career as a case worker for blind adults with developmental disabilities, he worked for the Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired for several decades until his eventual retirement. A long-time runner, he has served as a sighted guide for visually impaired runners in the Boston Marathon. He was proud to have been one of three founding members of the MABVI Run in 1990-91, which began as an unofficial Boston Marathon fundraiser, raising just $4,500 in the first year. Eventually becoming MABVI's Team With a Vision, a part of the Boston Athletic Association's Official Charity Program, it has gone on to raise over $3,000,000 to serve blind and visually impaired individuals. Setting the bar high for those of us to follow him to a ripe old age, asked how he was holding up during a recent visit, he responded, "Well, it's a little boring and the food is mushy, but we all have to go through it. Sure beats the alternative!" The son of the late Henry Powell and Kathrene Barnum Powell, both school teachers, and the brother of the late Addison (Bud) Powell of New York City and Shelburne, VT and the late Brad Powell of Sharon, MA, he was married to Mary-Lisa Cornell Powell of Anchorage, Alaska until her death in 1969. He subsequently married and was later divorced from Stephanie Dolbier Powell of Providence, RI, with whom he had three children who survive him: Nathaniel Edward Powell of Fort Worth, TX, Rebecca Faith Rust of Woodstock, CT, and Amy Elizabeth Powell Meyers of Los Angeles, CA. Survivors also include several nieces and nephews and seven grandchildren. A funeral mass will take place at Saint Mary of the Assumption Parish, Brookline, MA on Wednesday, January 26th at 11AM.
