Obituary

Doris "Dee" F. Lane, 89, formerly of 14 Mary Lane, Portsmouth, RI, died peacefully on Friday, July 21, 2023, in Boston, Massachusetts.

She is survived by her sons, David and Eric; her granddaughter, Alexa; and her nieces, Suzanne and Sylvia. She is predeceased by her parents, her brothers James and Robert, and her husband David.

Born in New York City on June 6, 1934, and raised on Long Island, New York, Dee was the daughter of S. Theodore and Helen (Hamburger) Lande. There she was a teenaged lifeguard, but also spent fondly remembered summers at Vermont's Putney Work Camp. She graduated from Antioch College. A brief marriage to Wayne Finegar ended in divorce.

Dee then moved to Boston, where she began a long fascination with medicine by working in the office of Dr. Frank Wheelock. She also received an M.A. in education from Boston University. While helping lead Trinity Church's youth mentoring program, Dee met David H. Lane, stationed in Boston during the refitting of his U.S. Navy ship. She married her sailor in Sudbury, Massachusetts on November 2, 1963, and accompanied him from Rhode Island, to Virginia, Cuba, Florida, California, and Greece—in 1975 returning with her family to the place she most loved among them: Aquidneck Island, RI. There she raised her children and lived happily with her husband until his passing in 2007. She also worked in a variety of capacities, often as an office manager, and for many years as a mobile medical examiner for life insurance companies, thereby meeting people from all walks of life around Narragansett Bay. Her yearly garage sales developed a local following, liberating the house of tchotchkes and treasures alike.

She later moved to the Boston area, returning to the city she loved and living closer to her son and granddaughter, until dementia gradually claimed her cherished independence.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 26 at 2pm at Brookline's Bell-O'Dea Funeral Home, and online.
