SMYTH, Charles Edward. On April 2, 2016. Born and raised in Brookline, MA., currently living in Cambridge, MA. Beloved husband of 56 years to Cecilia T. (Mullen) Smyth. Cherished father of Cecilia T.C. Barry and her husband David N. Barry of Cambridge, Charles E. Smyth and his wife Catherine A. of Winchester. Adored grandfather of Charles E., John B., and David N. Treasured brother of Elizabeth Cuigini of Brookline, and dearly loved brother in law of Daniel and Mary Conlon of Gloucester. Charles enlisted in the United States Navy during the Korean War proudly serving on the U.S.S. Salem and at the age 23 became the youngest commander Brookline V.F.W. Post # 864. Professionally Charles served as the President of Local 105 Professional and Technical Engineers and as President of Local 453 The Office and Professional Employees International Union. Charles was an accomplished athlete receiving basketball scholarships and awards in his high school days, but loved all sports especially baseball. He began a career with the Red Sox at the age of 12 serving as the visiting team bat boy and remained with the Yawkey Foundation through his 40's. Funeral from the Bell-O'Dea Funeral Home, 376 Washington St., BROOKLINE, Thursday morning April 7th at 9:10 followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Brookline at 10:00. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours in the funeral home on Wednesday April 6th from 4:00 - 8:00. Interment Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
